Is Instagram Still A Photo Sharing App?

Move over, TikTok and YouTube. On July 1, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced the popular app will start focusing more on videos to keep up with its competitors.

“We’re no longer a photo-sharing app or a square photo-sharing app,” said Mosseri in an IGTV.

Since the announcement, many photographers, businesses, and creators – those who primarily share photos for promotional purposes – aired their concerns about this content shift. Some Instagram users even threatened to switch to other photo-heavy platforms, like Twitter.

Here are a couple of concerns about the future of Instagram we know may be on your mind.

Why is Instagram Pushing for More Video?

Mosseri disclosed that most users visit the app for entertainment. To satisfy its users of this need, Instagram wants to embrace change by pushing more bite-sized videos. You’ll most likely see more Reels and IGTV videos on your Explore page, as well as Instagram Stories and live videos.

According to Mosseri, people will also see more recommended content from users they don't follow. A beta version of this Instagram Feed update started rolling out in late June.

Are Photos on Instagram Going Away Completely?

Although Mosseri claims Instagram is no longer a square photo-sharing app, you can still post photos on the platform if you like. Instead, you now have more sharing options than when the app first launched in 2010. You can post videos, shop from businesses, send pictures, and much more without ever leaving the app.

The Instagram team will focus on four main components moving forward with the app: video, online shopping, supporting creators, and messaging. These targets create a more personalized experience on Instagram while further connecting its users.

Luckily there’s nothing to worry about, as you can still find success in promoting your business or service on Instagram. Social media is all about embracing change and giving users the chance to post and see top-quality content.
