2024 Guide to Demographics of Social Media Users

Whether you're sharing your favorite photos on Instagram, composing your funniest tweet, or updating your distant relatives on Facebook - every social media platform has its specific purpose and audience.

We all know what we like to put where, but do we really know who makes up that online audience? At Social Stamina, we gathered some insights that help shed some light on who these age groups are and prefer!

What is the Twitter Audience Demographic?

Twitter allows users to stay updated – whether with the latest breaking news story or meme – and join global conversations. If you want to get your thoughts out there to a more openly diverse audience, this is the place to be.

The most prominent age group on the platform, at 40%, is 18-29 year-olds. At a close second, we have 13-17 year-olds. Unlike other apps, Twitter has a pretty even playing field when comparing the gender of their online users. There is only a 1% difference in the amount of female and male users on the site.

What age group Facebook Most Often?

Facebook connects and keeps you up to date with old friends and family (whether that's a good or bad thing is up to you!). It is one of the more personalized platforms as you can build a more selective network. Only your accepted friends can see your posts – ranging from a status to a photo to a shared post from another user.

As many of us expect when using this social media giant, Facebook holds a much older demographic than other sites. 65% of 50-64 year-olds use the platform, making it the highest percentage of this age group compared to Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat.

What does that mean to you? If you are marketing a product or service to an older demographic, your best bet is to use Facebook. Make sure to keep in mind the best times to post on Facebook for optimal exposure as well.

Who Will Be Using Instagram most often in 2022?

Instagram lets your creative side shine! Share your favorite photos and videos to build up your profile as you please. Some choose to edit their photos to create a more structured personal blog, while others post everything unfiltered. Many influencers even utilize Instagram to build a very successful career.

This app has the widest age variety of users. Though its highest percentage of users are 13-17 years old, 40% of 30-49 year-olds also use Instagram. However, there is a significant gap between male and female users. There are nearly 10% more female users than male users on the platform.

What is the Age Range of People Who Use Snapchat?

On Snapchat, you can send pictures and post Stories to a select group of friends. The catch is, those pictures you send don’t last forever!

Pictures you send to specific friends last a maximum of ten seconds before they are gone. Snapchat Stories last just as long but can be viewed for just 24 hours. Other social media platforms adopted a very similar model of Stories, but Snapchat was the first!

Snapchat holds a much younger demographic, as it is the newest of these social media platforms. 68% of 13-29 year-olds in the United States use the app. Like other apps, the majority of these Snapchat users are female.

A unique aspect of the platform that entices this younger audience is its "streak" feature. If you send individual Snapchats to a friend every day, you can build up a streak that displays next to their name. A fun yet simple way to stay connected with friends on the daily!
